Creation of the Armenian Church Youth Organization of the Netherlands

On March 1, 2025, a landmark meeting took place in Amersfoort, Netherlands where youth representatives of nine Armenian Church communities of the Netherlands gathered to address the future of Armenian youth within their congregations. This significant event was presided over by Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, the Pontifical Legate of the Western Europe, who was accompanied by esteemed clergy including Fathers Taron Tatevosyan, Mashtots Baghdasaryan, and Serop Alanjian. The gathering was not only a moment for discussion but also a crucial step towards strengthening the bonds of community and faith among Armenian youth in the Netherlands.

The central focus of the meeting revolved around the establishment of the Armenian Churches Youth Organization of the Netherlands (ACYON). This initiative arose from a recognized need to create a structured platform for the youth that could facilitate their spiritual and social development in the Netherlands. The discussions were rich and engaging, covering various facets of youth involvement and the preservation of Armenian faith and culture.

The mission of ACYON, as determined during this collaborative meeting, encompasses six vital pillars aimed at fostering a holistic development approach for Armenian youth in the Netherlands.

Firstly, the organization emphasizes the spiritual development of the youth, rooting this growth in the traditions and faith of the Armenian Church. This is essential not only for personal growth but also for the maintenance of ties to the rich cultural heritage of Armenia. Engaging the youth in parish activities is another key component, encouraging direct involvement in various church functions that foster a sense of belonging and community cohesion.

Moreover, preservation of the Armenian spiritual and national identity stands as a critical objective. In a multicultural European landscape, it is imperative that young Armenians remain anchored in their roots, understanding their historical and cultural significance. This is complemented by a commitment to community service, which not only benefits the local society but also instills a sense of responsibility among the youth, teaching the importance of giving back.

Additionally, the organization aims to foster Christian leadership, equipping young Armenians with the skills and confidence necessary to take on leadership roles within their communities and beyond. This leadership training will play a crucial role in shaping the next generation of community leaders who are grounded in Christian values.

Lastly, ACYON intends to promote Christian education projects, thereby enhancing the theological knowledge and understanding of church teachings among the youth.

During the meeting, discussions also touched upon the creation of local parish youth organizations, which would operate under the umbrella of ACYON. This localized approach aims to empower youth at the community level and create tailored initiatives that address the unique needs of each parish.

Concluding the meeting, all participants expressed their commitment to the mission and vision of ACYON, recognizing the significance of such an organization for the Armenian youth in the Netherlands. Archbishop Khajag Barsamian offered heartfelt gratitude to the clergy and young leaders for their enthusiasm and dedication, paving the way for a fruitful future for the Armenian Church and its youth across the nation. The establishment of ACYON marks a new chapter in the collective journey of Armenian youth in the Netherlands, one that promises spiritual enrichment and active engagement in both church and community life.
